Over a thousand high schoolers were in the room where it happens on April 13 as Hamilton played its first student matinee. Not only did the kids catch the show, but they also performed their own interpretations of American history on the Richard Rodgers stage. “I fell in love [with musicals] the same way kids are falling in love with Hamilton now,” star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda told NBC Nightly News, “which is listening to cast albums and imagining my own version in my mind.” That imagined version became a reality for the students, thanks to a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. “[Hamilton] started off like an immigrant,” one student said, “which we can relate to.” Another noted after the performance: “They look like me and my classmates.” Check out snippets from the first #EduHam day below.
